BHIMBETKA
 
Surrounded by the northern fringe of the Vindhyan ranges, Bhimbetka lies 46 km South of Bhopal. In this rocky terrain of dense forest and craggy cliffs, over 600 rock shelters belonging to the Neolithic age. Close to Bhopal at Bhimbetka are the prehistoric caves that preserve some fascinating paintings dating back to paleolithic times. Experts have concluded that these are at least as old as the specimen at Pyrnees. The name Bhimbetka comes from the Hindu Epic Mahabharata, Bhim-bait-ka means Bheem (One of the five pandavas) had rested here when Pandavas were banished from their kingdom. The Rock Shelters at Bhimbetka exhibit the earliest traces of human life in India. According to archaeologists, the caves must have been inhabited over 10,000 years ago. Surrounded by dense forests and rocky cliffs, the site is spectacular and is an Ornithologists paradise with its numerous bird species.
 
How to Reach
Bhimbetka is best reached from Bhopal. Bhimbetka is 46 km from Bhopal on NH 69. Getting to Bhopal is relatively easy.
   
Air: Bhopal is connected with Delhi, Mumbai, Gwalior and Indore by Indian Airlines flights.
   
Rail: Bhopal has trains to and from Delhi, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore, Amritsar and Secunderabad.
   
Road: Bhimbetka is well connected by road with Bhopal. Bhopal is connected to Mumbai (781 km); Ahmedabad (571 km); Delhi (728 km); Gwalior (422 km); Indore (187 km).
